The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the ratio of a person's weight (in kilograms) to the square of his / her height (in metres).
Although BMI is a good starting point for weight loss evaluation, doctors emphasize that weight alone does not always reflect the body muscle content. For instance, rugby players are renowned for their size and often weigh well over 15st (210lbs), but the main contribution to their weight is usually muscle.
As the strain on the NHS pocket increases, PCT's are having to make decisions whether to operate on people with very high BMI's. These people are more likely to require operations such as hip and knee replacements, and due to their excess weight pose an increased risk. Therefore BMI is a good indication of risk for the patient. So it also a useful tool and, when considering your own health, you should endeavour to lower it.
The ideal BMI is between 19-25.
You can check your BMI on the chart below or CLICK HERE for the NHS Diret online calculator.
Obesity, defined as a BMI of more than 30, is a growing problem in many OECD countries. Below is a diagram illustrating the percentage of various populations exceeding a BMI of 30.
